Nature with service, not service with nature

We are not a sporting outfitter. We are the hosts who recognize, after many conversations with many guests, that the perfect day in Campeche sometimes does not happen inside the casas — it happens on the water, on the field, or on the deck of a boat.

For each of these outings we work with the local operators we trust — the same ones we would recommend to a friend. We coordinate the booking, the transport and the rhythm. You arrive ready; we handle the details.

Three ways to head out

Sea, land, and the line between.

i.

Fly fishing · Baby tarpon

One of the most consistent baby tarpon fisheries in the Caribbean — and almost no one outside the fly-fishing circle knows it. Dawn departures from the town marina into the mangroves of the Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve: a maze of channels and flats that holds resident tarpon from five to thirty pounds year-round. Sight casting, local guides who read the tides, gear available for beginners. For veterans bringing their own rods, also. Reference rate: day fishing outing (5 hours) from 585 USD per boat, up to two anglers, with gear, water and ice included. Reference rate: private mangrove tour in Los Petenes (3 hours) from 320 USD per boat, up to three guests, with water and ice on board.

The fishing outing, in detail

North of the city, the Los Petenes biosphere reserve holds one of the most consistent juvenile tarpon fisheries in the world: some 130 kilometers of mangrove coast fed by freshwater springs, with seagrass banks and clear, shallow water. This is sight fishing: you move in a panga with a casting deck while the guide poles ahead, casting to located fish along the mangrove edge or over the grass banks. On a typical day you will see dozens of tarpon between 5 and 20 pounds, with larger fish in winter and spring, plus snook and snapper.

The practice is strictly catch and release, with careful fish handling to ensure recovery. You can fly fish (8 to 10 weight) or use light spinning tackle; both are provided on board if you do not travel with your own. Two anglers per boat at most; a non fishing companion is welcome to join the outing.

The outing includes
  • Panga with casting deck and specialist guide
  • Fly or spinning gear, flies, lures and leaders
  • Water and ice on board

The mangrove tour, in detail

The tour enters the inner channels of the Los Petenes biosphere reserve, where freshwater springs meet the Gulf and sustain three mangrove species: white, red and black. You move slowly through tunnels of roots until you reach a crystal clear spring in the middle of the mangrove, where you can swim in an almost untouched setting. Along the way you will usually spot herons, pelicans, kingfishers and roseate spoonbills, and with some luck, flamingos or a hawksbill turtle.

Outings leave from small marinas and fishermen's docks north of the city, close to the reserve; the exact departure point is confirmed on booking, along with the time, which is set each day by the tide: the channels are very shallow and can only be navigated with enough water. Up to three guests per boat, and a stretch of light fishing can be added along the way if the group wishes.

The tour includes
  • Boat and local reserve guide
  • Life vests
  • Water and ice on board
  • Time to swim at the freshwater spring
Good to know
  • Duration: 3 hours; departure point and time are confirmed on booking according to the tide
  • What to bring: swimsuit, towel, hat, repellent and biodegradable sunscreen (it is a natural reserve)
  • Capacity: up to three guests per boat; larger groups go out in several boats
  • Conditions: subject to weather and tide; guide gratuities not included

Golf · Eighteen holes between jungle and bay

Forty-five minutes from the walled city, a par-seventy-two course planted between rolling hills of tropical jungle, culminating in an open view of the bay of Campeche. Designed by an architect who has collaborated with Jack Nicklaus and Ernie Els; bermuda fairways, Tiff Eagle greens. It hosts the most important amateur tournament in Mexico. We book the tee time, arrange the transfer, and — if you like — coordinate a private instructor. Reference rate: 18 hole green fee for two players, cart included, from 210 USD; 9 hole round from 175 USD. Transfer available.

Golf, in detail

Half an hour from the center, El Delfín at Campeche Country Club is one of the best kept golf secrets in the Mexican southeast: 18 holes, par 72, up to 7,200 yards, designed by Greg Letsche, an architect who has built courses around the world alongside Jack Nicklaus and Ernie Els. The layout winds through hills and valleys of tropical jungle, with lakes, bridges and a waterfall on the 15th, opening at several points to views of the Bay of Campeche. Bermuda fairways and Tiff Eagle greens across 88 hectares, where the terrain sets the challenge and the ceibas and flamboyanes set the scenery.

The outing is arranged end to end from the house: green fee with cart included, round trip transfer and a reserved tee time. For a shorter game there is the 9 hole round, and the course also has a tree lined practice area unlike any other in the country. Afterwards, snack bar and pro shop at the clubhouse.

Marina · Out into the Gulf

From one of only four private marinas inside a country club in all of Mexico. Sailboat, motorboat or catamaran depending on the day and the group: sunsets on the Gulf, picnic on a small beach only reachable by sea, or simply a slow morning of open water with coffee and silence. We coordinate vessel, captain and provisioning; you choose the direction.
